Mission Re-Position: National Black
Choreographic Showcase Tour 2007
State of Emergency, an Arts Production and Management Company committed
to "pushing the boundaries of dance by the profiling of Black choreographic
work in a Black British style fusion", is to tour Mission Re-Position,
which features four women at the cutting edge of Black British choreography.
Each distinct new work expresses the women's diverse cultural heritage
and each piece draws on different aspects of the lives of women for
its theme. What results is an explosion of talent that fuses styles
such as contemporary, jazz, street and Brazilian dance and martial art:
- Woman (working title) by Zezé Kolstad explores and
challenges preconceptions and stereotypes of the female gender.
- Menelva Harry's Nature V Nurture re-visits a generation of
families who sacrificed their home in the Caribbean for what they
hoped would be a better life in England.
- Jeanefer Jean-Charles's Rosa Moments takes inspiration from
the seminal moment on December 1st, 1955 when a lone woman refused
to give up her seat on the bus that sparked one of the best known
civil rights movements in history.
- Louise Katerega's Between The Stones and The Stars expresses
Louise's quest for identity as a woman of dual European and African
heritage born in Britain at the end of the 20th century.
Working with the four choreographers are dancers Kate Mason, Marcia
Edwards, Darrell Aldridge, Kate Zamira Mummery, Amanda Lewis and Graham
Adey who have worked with companies including Pivotal Dance, Topiary
Dance Company, Motionhouse, RJC, ACE Music and Dance, Tavaziva, Rambert,
Random and CandoCo.
