Dateline: 31st August, 2004 More Edfringe Awards Spirit of the Fringe AwardsThe Jack Tinker Spirit of the Fringe Awards, run by the Daily Mail in honour of their former theatre critic, went this year to Mary Shields (formerly associate artistic director of the Assembly Rooms) and Una Maclean, actress, who appeared in the five star Shimmer at the Traverse. Carol Tambor AwardA new award this year, it is funded by the New York-based portrait painter and provides cah to take the winning production to New York for an off-Broadway run. Winners should have won a Scotsman Fringe First. She chose Rosebud by Mark Jenkins, the story of Orson Welles, but was so impressed by a non-Fringe First winner, Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters by Russell Barr, that she decided to make a second award. Freedom of Expression AwardThe Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award went to When the Bulbul Stopped Singing, by Raja Shehadeh, adapted by David Greig. Richard Pryor Award for Ethnic ComedyThis is the first year of this award, and it went to Egyptian-born, Californian-based Ahmed Ahmed.
