The Mother Ship on Tour Birmingham Rep's production of Douglas Maxwell's new play, The Mother Ship, is to tour in February and March. The play is a funny adventure about what it means to be young, to be different, or just to believe in something beyond the ordinary. Eliot is 18 and under severe stress. Theres no girlfriend in sight, his best mate has stopped swearing and his pregnant step-mum is even more stressed than he is And then, having got the call from outer space to say that The Mother Ship is leaving and coming to take him home, his disabled brother Gerry disappears. And its all Eliots fault. A riotous chase kicks off involving a love-lorn lifeguard, a policeman who believes in the existence of Klingons and a car that can turn into a boat. Douglas Maxwells plays include Helmet, Mancub, The Backpacker Blues and the multi-award winning Decky Does A Bronco. Future plays include Spring Awakening for Gridiron, The Miracle Man for the National Theatre of Scotland and Blood Country for the Traverse, Edinburgh. Associate Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre Ben Payne directs. His previous directorial credits include Paradise by Amber Lone and Undercarriage by David Watson. His own writing includes the stage adaptation of Jim Craces novel Quarantine, Sinner - a collaboration with Stan Wont Dance and The Wild Party for Rosie Kay Dance Company. The Tour
