Record Islands Tour for Mull Theatre

Mull Theatre is about to embark on a project which artistic director Alasdair McCrone believes will set a record.

"Mull Theatre," he said, "is just about to go into reheasal with a new script by Jon Pope based on the life and writings of Gavin Maxwell. Brightwater will rehearse and open on the Isle of Mull and tour to, in total, eighteen islands... well nineteen if you include mainland Britain, which I dare say you should."

The islands are Mull, Iona, Easdale, Coll, Tiree, Barra, South Uist, North Uist, Muck, Eigg, Skye, Shetland Mainland, Raasay, Lismore, Luing, Jura, Islay, Gigha and Britain.

"We're doing two on Shetland," he goes on, "and quite a few on Britain, mostly in the Highlands. And yes, I know, strictly speaking Skye is not an island, but we're getting onto it by boat from North Uist, so there!"

The tour opens on 13th September in Dervaig Village Hall, Mull, and ends on 10th November at Cairndow, Argyll.

Mull Theatre is one of Scotland’s foremost touring theatre companies, producing accessible and more challenging theatre, new work, revivals, children’s theatre, contemporary and classic Scottish and international theatre. It makes a significant contribution to the cultural life of its own island community and throughout Argyll and Bute, as well as to the overall provision of theatre activity within Scotland. Its productions tour extensively throughout Scotland, especially within the Highlands & Islands and particularly in Argyll & Bute.

Established in 1966, Mull Theatre aims to increase access to and participation in live theatre, both within its island community and beyond, and to create an environment which fosters creativity in the performing arts. It has been core funded by the Scottish Arts Council since 2001 and in April 2007 entered a 2-year flexible funding agreement.

The company commissions a new play each year and supports new writing through developmental workshops.

Mull Theatre has an Education and Participation programme with a range of classes, courses, workshops, support materials for all the company’s productions, work with schools and community groups and a further education drama course in association with Argyll College.

The famous Mull Little Theatre closed at the end of 2006 after 41 years of continuous summer repertory activity. The company has started building a new home on the island which will open in early 2008. Through this new theatre production centre at Druimfin just outside Tobermory, Mull Theatre aims to be a hub of creative opportunity.

In October 2006, Katie Morag, a new play commissioned and produced by Mull Theatre, was nominated as Best Show for Children and Young People at the TMA National Theatre Awards in London. It returns this year when the production will run at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews throughout December. In 2008 the show will tour in Scotland.

Mull Theatre’s tour plans also include the newly commissioned Swindle & Death by Peter Arnott, and a revival of its acclaimed production of Macbeth.
