Investigating murder: John Lyons as Inspector Hubbard in Dial M for Murder

The annual Colin McIntyre Classic Thriller Season will in 2017 comprise three plays at two new venues in Nottingham.

The season starts with Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder and will be followed by Dangerous Corner by J B Priestley, both at Nottingham Playhouse. The final offering is a new play by Karen Henson, Marie Lloyd and the Music Hall Murder which will be staged in Nottingham’s National Justice Museum.

Karen Henson, co-producer for Tabs Productions, said, “we feel genuinely privileged to be able to bring the same traditional recipe to other exciting venues in the centre of Nottingham this summer.

Dial M for Murder and Dangerous Corner are perfect examples of the genre while Marie Lloyd and the Music Hall Murder will have all the classic ingredients our loyal audience have come to expect in a unique and thrilling setting.”

John Lyons, best known as Detective Sergeant George Toolan in the long-running TV series A Touch of Frost, will play Inspector Hubbard in Dial M for Murder.

The rest of the cast comprises Anna Mitcham (Sheila Wendice), Chris Sheridan (Max Halliday), David Osmond (Tony Wendice) and Mark Huckett (Captain Lesgate).

The plot involves Tony Wendice, who married Margot for her money, planning to carry out the perfect murder. He blackmails a former acquaintance into strangling his wife and arranges a fail-safe alibi. In a twist of fate, the would-be murderer becomes the murdered and Margot survives. Tony sees the would-be assassin’s death as an opportunity to frame his wife for the murder of the man who tried to kill her.

Dial M for Murder runs at Nottingham Playhouse from Tuesday until Saturday, 11 to 15 July. Dangerous Corner takes over from 18 until 22 July and Marie Lloyd and the Music Hall Murder moves into the National Justice Museum from 25 until 29 July.
