Dateline: 12th September, 2004
"It'll Be Over by Christmas" Actress Nichola McAuliffe has launched a savage attack on the show she is currently rehearsing, saying that it will not last until Christmas. Murderous Instincts, dubbed "The Salsa Musical" in its publicity, opened at the Theatre Royal, Norwich, on 27th August and ran till 4th September. It was due to go into preview at the Savoy Theatre on 10th September, but it was announced last week that previews will not begin until 20th, although the opening night will remain 7th October. At the same time director Bob Carlton was replaced by American choreographer Michael Rooney, son of Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney. In an article in the Daily Mail, entitled The Show Must Go Wrong, McAuliffe commented on producer Manny Fox'shabit of sacking everyone: the show has had eight directors, four PR companies and innumerable general managers. "For the past week weve had the same team," McAuliffe says, "and if they last another couple of days, I might even start to learn their names. She explains why she agreed to take a part in the show: "I needed the money. They wanted me because Joanna Lumley wasnt available and isnt as cheap anyway. The show is written by Cinda Fox, heiress to the Firestone Tyre fortune, whose husband is the producer. The tyre reference prompted McAuliffe to comment that the show "promised to be like a motorway pile up". The description "The Salsa Musical" has now been removed from the publicity - because, according to McAuliffe, the cast can't master Salsa, and it is now being described as "The musical to die for". These kinds of public comments from McAuliffe are not unknown: earlier this year she supported the campaign for public money for the restoration of West End theatres, describing, for example, the London Palladium, where she was appearing at the time, as a "rat-infested pit".
