Dance in the Museum

The Xfactor Dance Company is to perform extracts of The Dearly Departed at The Royal Museum, Edinburgh

'What happens to us after death?' This eternal question is to be explored in an exciting new series of dance performances to be held at the Royal Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh on Tuesday 29th October, Saturday 2nd November and Sunday 3rd November 2002.

Edinburgh-based Xfactor Dance Company is presenting extracts from The Dearly Departed, a bold, innovative and thought-provoking show which focuses on beliefs about the afterlife. The show was inspired by the exhibition Heaven and Hell and Other Realms of the Dead, which took place at the Royal Museum two years ago. Now Xfactor Director Alan Greig has collaborated with dance students from Telford College and the National Museums of Scotland to produce special extracts from the show for visitors to the Royal Museum.

Alan Greig says: 'I am delighted to have the opportunity to rework The Dearly Departed, working with the committed and energetic students from Edinburgh's Telford College. Performing in the stunning setting of the Royal Museum is a unique opportunity, and a rare privilege.'

Alex Craig, Programme Team Leader at Telford College, says: 'The Dearly Departed is one of the most exciting works that has come from the choreographic genius of Xfactor's Alan Greig. Now to be restaged and developed specifically for the National Museums of Scotland, this offers a unique opportunity for audiences to see this dynamic work performed in a very different environment with a large cast of final year dance students from the Centre of Professional Dance Training at Edinburgh's Telford College. This is an unmissable opportunity and one of the dance events of the year.'

Alison Sheridan, Curator of Heaven and Hell, comments: 'Alan Greig brings Heaven and Hell to life in his amazing show at the Royal Museum.'

There will be a chance to meet with Alan Greig and the dance students from Telford College for informal discussions after each show.

The Xfactor Dance Company was formed in 1990 by artistic director Alan Greig. The company is one of only three Scottish dance companies to receive revenue funding from the Scottish Arts Council. Xfactor has remained one of the Scotland's consistently innovative and thought-provoking companies, enthralling critics and audiences alike with their unique repertory of work.

The Dearly Departed was first performed at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, earlier this year and has toured venues throughout Scotland.
