International Festival of Music Theatre in Cardiff
Yr Wyl Rhyngwladol Theatr Gerdd yng Nghaerdydd

14th October to 3rd November, 2002, will see the launch of the replacement for the Vivian Ellis Prize, Cardiff's International Music Theatre Festival.

Sponsored by BBC Cymru Wales, Cardiff City Council and Cardiff2008 (the city will be European City of Culture in 2008), the festival is a search for new musicals from all over the world, and composers, lyricists and librettists are being asked to submit entries.

There will be three rounds to the competition. In Round One all entries will be judged by five songs (chosen by the submitter) and a synopsis of the show. Those selected to go to Round Two will then by judged by the full libretto and score.

The aim of the second round is to select those which will go before a "Grand Jury", which will choose the entries which will be showcased.

Any composer, lyricist etc. can submit up to three entries, which must be shows that have not had a professional production. Shows which have been performed by amateurs are eligible.

The competition rules are very stringent. Entrants must submit four copies of a CD or tape of the score, four copies of the lyric sheets and the scenes in which the five songs used in the first round occur, and four copies of the synopsis. Entrants who get through to the second round must supply three copies of the libretto and those chosen for showcasing must supply a vocal and piano score.
