Dateline: 4th January, 2004 Nagy and Churchill in Kentish Town Twice as Loud Theatre Company presents Trips Cinch by Phyllis Nagy & Three More Sleepless Nights by Caryl Churchill The double bill marks the return to the London fringe of Twice As Loud and juxtaposes hallmark pieces from two of the most challenging women writers of our time. In only its second production in this country, Trips Cinch, by American writer, Phyllis Nagy, explores the controversial case of a multi-millionaire businessman acquitted of rape. With Nagy, however, there are no easy answers, neither clear victims nor demons, and what actually happened remains ambiguous to the end. Instead the play raises questions about the shifting nature of truth, the role of the media, and the politics of sexual pursuit, particularly relevant in todays celebrity-obsessed, spin-dominated world. In the more familiar Three More Sleepless Nights, by our own Caryl Churchill, we move to the territory of established relationships. Whether talking and shouting over each other, or stranded in silence and inept inanities, the tragedy here is the inability of these characters to communicate what they truly feel for each other and to make each other happy. Again there is no glib apportionment of blame and the underlying humanity in Churchills writing gives the piece a timeless and universal appeal. Tough subjects, certainly, which will leave you thinking after the plays are done, but both writers share a mordant wit. Black humour it maybe, but it is there in both pieces, and sympathy too for each of the flawed characters presented in the plays. Both writers write the kind of dense dialogue, yet with not one redundant word, which has the feel of poetry but the recognisable sound of everyday life, and it was this further connection, both in terms of writing style and structure, which led us to put the two plays together. "A spirited and eclectic bunch of writers/performers who view the world as inquisitively as new-born babes", Twice As Loud Theatre Company was formed in 1995 and quickly established a successful formula on the London fringe. The Lion & Unicorn Theatre, January 27th to February 8th 2004. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
