She began her career in Leeds at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and made her London debut as Nina in Chekhov's The Seagull at the Lyric, Hammersmith, in 1985, winning the London Drama Critics' most promising newcomer award. In 1990 she played Anna in Anna Christie at the Old Vic, a role which she reprised later on Broadway, winning the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Debut of an Actress, as well as being nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. She went on to win a Tony (for Best Actress in a Musical) in 1998 for her performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in which she co-starred with Alan Cumming, under the direction of Sam Mendes, for which she also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and an Outer Critics Circle Award. Other London theatre includes Ibsen's The Lady From the Sea (Almeida, 2003), Closer (National Theatre, 1999) and A Streetcar Named Desire (Broadway, 2005). In the 80s and 90s she was one of Britain's top film actresses, appearing in a wide range of films from Ken Russell's Gothic to The Parent Trap. She was an award winner in film, too, winning the Evening Standard Best Actress award in 1990 for The Handmaid's Tale and The Comfort of Strangers, and again in 2005 for Asylum. She is survived by her hisband Liam Neeson and their sons.
