Four circus performers, five musicians, four actors and four comedy actors will help Newcastle-under-Lyme’s New Vic Theatre to celebrate a local hero in its “most ambitious show to date”, Astley’s Astounding Adventures.

Philip Astley, the founder of the first modern circus, was born in the Staffordshire town. Astley’s Astounding Adventures charts his journey from his beginnings in Newcastle-under-Lyme to the circus phenomenon that captured the hearts of millions.

The play has been written by Staffordshire-born Frazer Flintham. It is co-directed by the New Vic’s artistic director Theresa Heskins and Vicki Amedume, founder of Upswing Circus.

Heskins, said, “Astley’s Astounding Adventures sees us working with partners from across the UK theatre and circus industries. We’re thrilled to be shining a spotlight on Newcastle-under-Lyme, our local hero Philip Astley and his astonishing legacy.

“The art form he created went on to become the phenomenon it is today, with circus travelling to all corners of the globe, crossing languages, cultures and continents.

“It’s hugely exciting to be telling his story in the town where he was born in this anniversary year.”

The cast includes Nicholas Richardson as Astley, Danielle Bird, Gareth Cassidy, Graeme Clint, Jason Eddy, Michael Hugo, Charline Kandillian, Nickcolia King-N’Da, Lucky Murphy and Andrew Pollard.

Astley’s Astounding Adventures runs at the New Vic from Saturday 7 until Saturday 28 July.
