Treasure Island will be the Christmas 2017 production at the Staffordshire theatre-in-the-round the New Vic.

The Newcastle-under-Lyme venue’s artistic director Theresa Heskins will adapt and direct the production. She was previously behind Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen in 2016, Robin Hood and Marian in 2015, Mary Orton’s The Borrowers in 2014 and Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians in 2013.

Treasure Island will feature “high physicality, live original music, spectacular set and costumes and larger-than-life characters, inviting audiences aboard the famed ship The Hispaniola”.

Heskins said, “plays that speak to audiences across the generations make for my favourite kind of theatre. Knowing that so many children will experience their first taste of the magic and wonder of theatre by coming along makes this time of year all the more special to the New Vic.

“The great thing about theatre-in-the-round is that the audience feels swept up in the action and this year we’re going for out-and-out adventure. So the heart-thuddingly exciting fights, the drama of climbing a ship’s rigging, the lure of buried treasure and the danger of an island populated by pirates will all be brought to vivid life in front of and around our audience.”

Treasure Island runs at the New Vic from Saturday 18 November until Saturday 27 January 2018.
