The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) has sold the West End's 403-seater New Ambassadors Theatre to Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen, the owner of St Martins and the Victoria Palace. When Whipping It Up, which is currently running in the theatre, ends in June, the theatre will drop the "New" and revert to being the Ambassadors Theatre, the name it had from 1913 to 1999. Most of the staff will stay with the theatre under the new management, although some will be redeployed within the ATG organisation. Rosemary Squire, joint chief executive of ATG and current president of SOLT (of which Waley-Cohen is a former president) said, "We are delighted that this wonderful West End venue is in Sir Stephens hands one of the most reputable and successful men in the theatre industry today. We hadnt planned to sell the venue, but the offer made good commercial sense at a time that coincides with our overseas expansion and the launch of our New York office. We wish Sir Stephen and his team every success." Two years ago ATG bought the Savoy Theatre from Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen.
