Theatre For Sale The Really Useful Group is to sell its one remaining playhouse, the 1,100-seater New London Theatre. "The venue is much more suited to plays," a spokesman told the Stage, which reported the story today, "and RUG is looking to focus on its musical theatre houses." Two years ago the company sold its other London playhouses - the Apollo, the Duchess, the Garrick and the Lyric - to Nimax, the partnership between Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer. Its lease on the Gielgud recently reverted to its owners Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, which also owns the Noël Coward, the Novello, the Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, the Queen's and Wyndham's. At the beginning of this month, RUG sold its ticketing subsidiary, See Tickets, to Stage Entertainment, which is rumoured to be a possible bidder for the New London. The Royal Shakespeare Company will not be a potential buyer, the Stage report says, although it has been thought that it might be looking for a permanent home in London. A spokesperson told the newspaper that the RSC is focused on the redvelopment of the RST and "not in a position to buy anything at the moment." Currently the RSC's King Lear and The Seagull, starring Ian McKellen, are playing at the theatre. The New London opened in 1973 and was the home of Cats from 1981 until 2002.
