Lisa's Sex Strike publicity image

A New Lysistrata

The Bolton Octagon and Northern Broadsides are to present the World Premiere production of Lisa’s Sex Strike by Blake Morrison, a contemporary version of Aristophanes’ classic Greek comedy, Lysistrata. The play opens at the Octagon from Thursday 6th September to Saturday 22nd September 2007 before setting off on a three-month national tour. This is the first major production of the Octagon’s 40th Anniversary Season, which boasts five World Premieres in total.

Lisa’s Sex Strike is set in urban, northern England. Racial tensions abound and the women of the town decide to control matters by withholding sex from their men until the fighting stops. By the end, everyone is ‘dying for it’, but when the women picket the local factory and discover its role in the arms trade, their local dispute takes on global proportions.

Lisa’s Sex Strike is a biting satire that takes on the great issues of our time – race, war, religion and sexual morality – with disturbing hilarity. Bawdy, highly theatrical and non-naturalistic in style, it has a large cast of fourteen actors, original music and song performed live on stage by the cast, and a script rich in poetry, wit and double entendre. Conrad Nelson directs this production - his third as Associate Director for Northern Broadsides - as well as composing all the music for the play. Costumes and set are designed by Jessica Worrall.

The play is Blake Morrison (an acclaimed poet)’s fifth collaboration with Northern Broadsides, following the critical successes of The Cracked Pot (1996, 2001) and Sophocles’ Oedipus (2001), both of which played at the Octagon Theatre, Antigone (2003) and The Man With Two Gaffers (2006). This production coincides with the release of a major film version of Blake’s celebrated autobiography, And When Did You Last see Your Father?, featuring Colin Firth as Blake and Jim Broadbent as his father.

The cast (in alphabetical order) is Seema Bowri, Sally Carman, Becky Hindley, Rebekah Hughes, Michael Hugo, Anthony Hunt, Chris Nayak, Eve Polycarpou, Simon Holland Roberts, Barrie Rutter, Chook Sibtain, Jessica Taylor, Declan Wilson, Flo Wilson.
