Rik Mayall in the TV series of The New Statesman

New Statesman, New Labour, New Play

Rik Mayall will return to the British stage and to the character of Alan B'Stard in the world stage premiere of The New Statesman by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, which will open at the Theatre Royal Brighton on 19th April at the beginning of a national tour.

Does a leopard ever really change his spots? Parliament is in session and one of the shining stars of Blair's New Labour cabinet takes his place in the House. Meet Alan B'Stard, impeccably pin-striped, nose aloft, stalking the corridors of power leaving a trail of devastation in his wake. Will B'Stard - the most depraved and selfish politician of all time - still be on top in Blair's caring New Labour government? Will he find the weapons of mass destruction? Why is Condoleezza Rice in and out of Alan's back door? How did Alan B'Stard get into the Labour Party? Is anybody safe?,,,

Rik Mayall played Alan B'Stard in four series of The New Statesman on television from 1987 to 1992, for which he won several awards. His prolific television career includes Bottom, Blackadder, The Young Ones, The Comic Strip Presents… and All About George. His West End stage work includes Waiting For Godot, The Common Pursuit and The Government Inspector.

Writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, who wrote the television series The New Statesman, have written a brand new satirical comedy, which will be constantly updated to reflect the news of the moment. Marks and Gran are responsible for many television productions, including Shine on Harvey Moon, Relative Strangers, Birds of a Feather, Goodnight Sweetheart, Starting Out and Love Hurts. Their recent stage play, Playing God, was commissioned by Alan Ayckbourn and produced at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 2005.

The New Stateman will be directed by Jennie Darnell, whose recent credits include U.S and Them and The Dead Eye Boy at Hampstead Theatre. A Theatre Royal Brighton production, The New Stateman is produced by Howard Panter for the Ambassador Theatre Group and David Ian for Live Nation, the producing partnership responsible for the current smash hit West End production of Guys and Dolls.
