David Lan

The New Young Vic Launches

Ambitious plans for the opening of the 'new' Young Vic have been announced by Artistic Director David Lan. Recognised as a major creative force in London, in its last year in its old home the Young Vic received a 2004 Olivier Award for "an audacious season under David Lan".

Since then it has produced 22 shows over the 22 months of its Walkabout season, playing at 41 theatres in thirty cities in the UK and Europe.

Jude Law championed a fundraising campaign which has so far achieved 97% of its £12.45 million target. The new permanent complex designed by Haworth Tompkins, now comprising three theatres, is on course for completion - on time, on budget - this autumn.

Today David Lan announced a typically eclectic and wide-ranging programme.

  • The Main House opens with Tobias and the Angel, a community opera by Jonathan Dove and David Lan which features, alongside professional singers and musicians, choruses and choirs of all ages drawn from Lambeth and Southwark.
  • A new departure this year, the Christmas show The Enchanted Pig is the world premiere of a sung-through musical tale co-produced with The Opera Group.
  • David Lan directs The Soldiers' Fortune, Thomas Otway's restoration comedy, continuing a Young Vic tradition of reviving unjustly neglected classics.
  • Young Vic Associate Director Rufus Norris directs the premiere of a new adaptation of DBC Pierre's Booker Prize winning Vernon God Little.

Two new Theatres open: the Maria (capacity 160) and the Clare (capacity 80) named after Maria Björnson (Theatre Designer 1949-2002) and Clare Venables (Theatre Director 1943-2003). The programme includes:

  • Brecht as you've never seen him in The Big Brecht Fest - four short, early plays in new translations by Rory Bremner, Martin Crimp, Biyi Bandele and Enda Walsh.
  • New plays by Dennis Kelly Love and Money and debbie tucker green: generations.

World theatre artists: David Charles Abell, Paul Arditti, Hildegard Bechtler, Dick Bird, Paule Constable, Rick Fisher, John Fulljames, Phillipe Giradeau, Paul Groothuis, Paul Hunter, Katie Mitchell, Ian MacNeil, Ultz, Sacha Wares, Ben Wright…

Indhu Rubasingham new Associate Director alongside Rufus Norris and Matthew Dunster. Luc Bondy and Gisli Örn Gardarsson new International Associates. The Young Directors Project continues at full strength with 460 members.

New low ticket prices: £21.50 and £9.50.
