Northampton Jobs Crisis Up to 100 Job Losses as Northampton Theatres Go DarkAs many as 100 staff may be laid off when the Royal and Derngate Theatres, Northampton, close for a major refurbishment. The management are unable to say how many jobs will go. They have begun formal, confidential consultation with the unions about the redundancies. A spokesman for the theatres said the staff had known about the redevelopment for many years as it had been in the planning phase since the mid-1990s when an initial lottery application was submitted. The closure has been extended from 11 to 14 months because asbestos dust will have to be removed and the rotten floor of the stalls in the Royal replaced. The redevelopment is due to start next April. The theatres employ more than 100 staff including part-timers and casuals. In a statement the theatre said: "We confirm that if redundancies do go ahead, staff will be offered the option of employment when the theatres reopen."
