Dateline: 10th March, 2006
Noh Opera in London On 28th and 29th at 7.30 March Japanese company Izuru will perform a "Noh Opera" version of Macbeth in the Britten Theatre, Royal College of Music (Prince Consort Road London SW7 2BS). Noh Opera, says the company, is "a unique and innovative style of theatre performance ... generated from blending the similarities and divergences of the Japanese performance art Noh and the Western Opera." The cast is composed of four Japanese Noh performers from the Kanze School and four European singers from the Royal College of Music. The company believes that the core concept of this performance is to explore the darkness which exists within Macbeths mind and how this links to the Noh aesthetic of Yugen, the subtle and the profound in which beauty is appreciated through a kind of minimalism: a few words or a few brushstrokes suggesting what has not been openly stated. NY Arts Magazine, talking of the performance at the at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center in Brooklyn, described it as "an innovative and pleasant surprise". The piece is adpated and directed by Kan Yuki with music composed by Akiko Assai. Tickets are £5, £15 and £20. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
