The Derngate auditorium: technology is out of date

Northampton Royal and Derngate has begun an appeal to raise money to modernise the technology below the Derngate stage and auditorium.

When built 31 years ago, the Derngate auditorium was the first of its kind in the UK, harnessing the most up-to-date technology. It has supported the weight of more than six million customers during its life span and now needs to be replaced.

Arts Council England is to provide a one-off grant of £423,514—85% of the total cost. The theatre needs to have the remaining cash in place by the end of March and wants to raise a further £63,000 by the deadline.

Everyone who supports the appeal will be acknowledged on a new donors’ wall which will be installed in the foyer once the project is completed.

Peter Knott, Arts Council England area director, said, “a key part of the Arts Council’s role is to invest in the equipment and buildings arts and cultural organisations need to produce great art and culture in their communities.

“Over the past three decades Royal and Derngate has become an integral part of Northamptonshire’s cultural life. This funding will ensure essential upgrades are made to the theatre’s facilities so people can continue to enjoy great performances there.”

Martin Sutherland, Royal and Derngate’s chief executive, added, “in the next few weeks we anticipate welcoming at least 15,000 audience members to enjoy performances in the Derngate. If every one of those attending donated just £5 to this appeal we would be able to achieve our fundraising target and accept the vital grant from Arts Council England.”
