Exeter's Northcott May Close Exeter's Northcott Theatre may be forced to close after losing its £547,000 Arts Council grant from 2009. The venue is just reopening after a £2.1m refurbishment - £100,000 of which came from ACE, in addition to £540,000 revenue grant while the theatre was closed. It will be January before the cut is confirmed but the venue has already been told that ACE South West intends to cut its grant in its next three-year funding plan because of concerns "in a number of areas". ACE's executive director in the South West, Nick Capaldi, said that the organisation must use its money as wisely as possible, which means "investing in organisations that are producing the most innovative work that reaches out to the widest audiences." He added, however, that the theatre "can respond to our recommendation and our regional council will take its response into account before making a final funding decision in the new year." A statement from the theatre's board, quoted in the local paper, the Express and Echo, said the cut "will make it impossible to operate the theatre and that there is a "very real possibility" that it could be forced to close next year with the loss of 58 jobs." According to a local website, the refurbishment was paid for by grants from Exeter City Council (£750,000), Devon County Council (£450,000) and the University of Exeter (£300,000) plus private donations. The three organisations only pledged their money after receiving assurances from the Arts Council that it was committed to the theatres future.
