Dateline: 28th December, 2003 Nottingham Celebrates with Record Playhouse Attendances Nottingham Playhouse has reported record attendances over the past twelve months, prompting the management to proclaim it is leading the way in re-inventing regional theatre programming. Audiences are up 21% this year compared with last. The year is about to end on a high with sell-out productions of Othello and Kenneth Alan Taylor's 20th pantomime for the Playhouse, Aladdin. The main-stage productions in 2003 included a revival of Polygraph by Robert Lepage and Marie Brassard; the Playhouse-commissioned Rat Pack Confidential; the first production in the Nottingham-initiated Eclipse Theatre project, Moon On A Rainbow Shawl by Errol John; the first British production of Peter Brook's The Man Who; and a new play by Andy Barrett, The Day That Kevin Came. Artistic director Giles Croft said: "It's fantastic that we can be ambitious in our programming and continue to build audiences. It's clear that there is a real hunger for work that challenges as well as entertains and that Nottingham Playhouse is leading the way in re-inventing regional theatre programming. Best of all, theatre here is attracting a really mixed audience, proving that theatre is thriving." Since the appointment of chief executive Stephanie Sirr in 2001, the Playhouse has toured to more than 55 towns and cities. Further tours are planned for autumn 2004 and spring 2005. "It's been a hugely exciting and varied year. Our commitment to the most stimulating work and highest production standards is reflected in our increased audiences," she said. "The team at the Playhouse has worked tirelessly this year and their efforts have been extremely fruitful."
