The Royal and Derngate Theatre

Northampton Theatre Safe

Northampton's Royal and Derngate Theatre has been saved from almost certain closure after Northampton Borough Council decided to cut its revenue grant in the next financial year by £200,00, rising to £400,000 by 2009/10 (see our story of 23rd January). The county council has stepped in to fill the gap for next financial year, although there is no commitment regarding subsequent years. However, a statement. from the theatre says that this will give them time to "work with other partners to look at funding for future years and ensure that the threat of closure is dispelled."

The statement went on to say, "If the Borough Council cut had gone ahead without any the money offered by the County, the theatre had faced the withdrawal of money from several other funders which would have led to immediate insolvency."
