The National Theatre Annual Report
for 2002-2003
Financial Report
- The National achieved a surplus of £58,000 on its operations
for the year ended 30 March 2003 which took the accumulated operating
surplus to £157,000.
- Box office attendance averaged 80% across the year but total income
fell reflecting reduced ticket prices and a smaller seating capacity
in the Lyttelton during the six month Transformation season.
- The bookshop performance sales revenue exceeded £1m for the
first time.
- Sponsorship and donation income received for operational activities
and restricted projects exceeded £5.1m, representing an increase
of £1.7m on the previous year.
- The cost of performances and activities represents over 60% of the
Nationals total expenditure.
- The National received an additional £1m in its revenue grant
for the financial year ended 30 March 2003 which took the grant to
£13.8m and resulted in the Arts Council main grant accounting
for 35% of total income compared to 34% in the previous year.
- The National is pleased to have secured additional revenue grants
from ACE of £1.55m from 1 April 2004 and a further £0.9m
from 1 April 2005.
