National Theatre Chairman Appointed

Richard Findlay has been appointed Chairman of the National Theatre of Scotland. The Chief Executive of Scottish Radio Holdings Plc, Mr Findlay is a respected businessman who has successfully expanded Scottish Radio Holdings over a number of years, bucking the trend for the media industry as a whole.

Mr Findlay is also a trained actor and a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, with a lifelong interest in theatre. He was Chairman of the Royal Lyceum Theatre for six years and is currently a governor of the RSAMD.

Frank McAveety, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, announced the appointment on 3rd December and wished Mr Findlay the best of success.

The Scottish Arts Council is delighted with the appointment, and we believe Mr Findlay has the best combination of talents to deliver a dynamic and internationally significant National Theatre. He is committed to giving Scotland - all of Scotland - a successful, glamorous and exciting National Theatre.

The independent panel set up to appoint the Chair comprised representatives from the Scottish Arts Council, members of the original national theatre working group and representatives of the theatre community.

Mr Findlay said: "I am delighted to be taking on the role of Chairman. I look forward to playing a part in creating something very special for Scotland."

What next for the National Theatre's development?

The next stage of development for the National Theatre of Scotland will be the recruitment of a Board of Directors. A series of open advertisements in the national press have already appeared.

Richard Findlay has outlined his intention that approximately eight people should be recruited to the board initially, with the potential to grow further if necessary. The recruitment panel has been impressed by the quality of candidates who have already expressed an interest in board membership.

We will keep you informed regarding board appointments as the process continues.

Drama Forum 16th December

Many thanks to those of you who attended the Scottish Arts Council Drama Forum on 16 December. The event was very well attended and a series of lively discussions took place on the following topics: new writing, international perspectives, audiences, venues, the National Theatre Online and education.

Two representatives of the Swedish national touring theatre, Andreas Darlden and Harrald Carlsted of the Riksteatern, spoke of their experience of national theatre. The Riksteatern is one of the few national theatres with a model similar to the collaborative model envisaged for the National Theatre of Scotland.

We plan to publish a detailed report on the Forum in Spring 2004. For more information please visit: www.scottisharts.org.uk

Exit Stage Left…

Many of you will wish to join us in thanking Morag Ballantyne for her hard work supporting the National Theatre Working Group and the Steering Group over the past 3 years. She has been very helpful in moving the project forward and time and again has offered the solution to practical issues. Morag is moving to England with her family. She will be greatly missed.

Enter Stage Right…

Lisa Kapur, a freelance arts consultant, has been retained from January to support the development of the National Theatre over the next few months.

She will support the Chair and the Board in the recruitment process for senior staff, in securing temporary office premises in Glasgow and other practical tasks. We wish Lisa a warm welcome.
