Autumn in Newcastle

Newcastle's Theatre Royal has announced its season from September 2005 to January 2006. It includes one world premiere and one UK touring premiere, as well as the annual Royal Shakespeare Company season.

"Although tinged with sadness following the untimely passing of Peter Sarah, the Autumn Season is brimming with some of the most outstanding talent in the world of theatre," said acting general manager Grahame Morris. "It is a testament to this great venue that year on year we attract the very finest talent available and bring North East audiences the opportunity to view works from the world's most respected and inspirational companies."

The season consists of:

Fri 2 - Sat 17 September
Ducktastic
From the team that created The Play What I Wrote (producer David Pugh, director Kennth Branagh and performers Hamish McColl and Sean Foley), the world premiere of a new comedy filled with showgirls, fireworks, dancing waterfalls, death defying feats and an erupting volcano - not to mention the world's most amazing duck!

Glorious

Maureen Lipman plays the worst singer in the world, based on the true story of the eccentric American Florence Foster Jenkins, otherwise known as the 'socialite soprano' and the 'dire diva of din'.

Tues 27 & Wed 28 September
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre
Highlights of the evening are Alvin Ailey's most famous work, Revelations, a celebration of the rousing gospel and spiritual music Ailey grew up with in 1930s Texas, and Love Stories, Judith Jamison's collaboration with modern dance maverick Robert Battle and hip hop pioneer Rennie Harris set to a Stevie Wonder soundtrack.

The History Boys

The Theatre Royal is the first stop on the new tour of the National Theatre award-winning play.

Mon 10 & Tues 11 October 2005
The Mark Morris Dance Group
The first part of the programme features the tender and poignant Somebody's Coming to See Me Tonight, reflecting the nostalgic Americana of Stephen Foster's music, followed by Morris' newest work Candleflowerdance to music by Igor Stravinsky. In the second half, the humourous The Tamil Film Songs in Stereo Pas de Deux and the masterpiece Grand Duo display the artistry and versatility of the dancers.

The Mikado

The Carl Rosa Opera Company return to Newcastle on the 120th anniversary of The Mikado, which features the original 1885 period costume designs from Gilbert's own Savoy production.

Cinderella
Starring Jill Halfpenny (currently appearing as Thérèse Raquin in The Bodies at Live Theatre) as Cinders, Nigel Ellacott and Peter Robbins as the Ugly Sisters, Clive Webb as the Baron and Danny Adams as Buttons.
