No NYMT Funding from ACE

The National Youth Music Theatre will not receive any Arts Council funding, it has been announced.

In early 2004 a review commissioned by ACE had recommended substantial funding but fourteen months later it has decided not to make an award.

"If they had told us nine or even six months ago we wouldn't have made the plans that we have," Maggie Semple, the NYMT chair said. "They have irresponsibly led us along."

In a letter to the Times, a number of NYMT alumni, including Jude Law, Laura-Michelle Kelly and Jonny Lee Miller, said they had effectively started their training with the NYMT. "We deplore the decision of the Arts Council," the letter said. "We appeal to organisations and individuals who wish to see music theatre for young people thrive to find financial support for this important arts organization. If the Arts Council cannot see the value of the NYMT’s work, we emphatically do."

The company actually closed in October 2003 when it was in the verge of trading insolvently, a financial crisis which has been growing since Andrew Lloyd Webber withdrew his £2m sponsorship in 1999.
