New Season in Bolton The Octagon Theatre in Bolton has announced its new season to follow its Christmas offering of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. In February, the Octagon with Nitro presents the world premiere of a new salsa dance musical The Wedding Dance, written and directed by Felix Cross with music by Alex Wilson, described as 'West Side Story meets Dangerous Liaisons with a dash of Tarantino'. Following this, artistic director Mark Babych follows his triumphant Miller production earlier this year of A View From The Bridge with another Arthur Miller classic, Death of a Salesman. In April, the popular and often underrated playwright Alan Ayckbourn provides some dark humour with his Absurd Person Singular, set in different houses at Christmas parties over different years. From the older master craftsman of the theatre, the theatre looks to the younger generation of acclaimed playwrights for its next production as Babych directs the regional premiere of Conor McPherson's Shining City. The Octagon's summer production is once again a live music spectacular, after the success of this year's Blonde Bombshells of 1943 by Alan Plater and last year's wonderful production of Jim Cartwright's Eight Miles High. This year, the music is ragtime, blues, jazz and swing as Babych directs Song of Singapore with book, music and lyrics by Allan Katz, Erik Frandsen, Michael Garin, Robert Hipkens and Paula Lockheart. In March, there will be 'script in hand' performances of three new plays shortlisted for the 25th anniversary playwriting competition of North West Playwrights. The winning script will be given a full production in 2008. Children's Theatre Saturdays continue with Carnival Child from Jactito, Fishy Tales from Liz Fost, Soft as a Brush from CTC, The Two Bum Bun from Moby Duck, Yuck! It's A Duck! from Openwide and Tattercoats from Multistory. Visiting productions include Feeling Good with Market Trends, No Nonsense with Romeo and Juliet and Bad Penny with Up The Gary. There will also be comedy from John Bishop and Richard Herring and music from The Studio Sessions (local acoustic music featuring Moore Marriott in a cabaret-style setting), Arun Ghosh, Soundwaves of the Soul, The Real Thing and The X Commitments.
