New Director at Bolton The Octagon Theatre in Bolton has announced that the successor to artistic director Mark Babych, who leaves in July 2009 after ten years in the post, will be David Thacker. Thacker, who will celebrate his 58th birthday later this month, has directed for stage and television for many years and has most recently acted as executive director of Shakespeare North, a campaign to build an Elizabethan theatre in Prescot in Merseyside. He has previously been theatre director at the Dukes in Lancaster, Director of the Young Vic in London and director-in-residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has directed over a hundred stage productions, developing a close working relationship with Arthur Miller when he directed British premieres of four of his plays, and episodes of Waking the Dead, Dalziel and Pascoe, Silent Witness and Kavanagh QC for television. Thacker said of his appointment, "The Octagon offers the perfect challenge for me at this point in my career." The Octagon's executive director John Blackmore said, "It is a measure of how far the Octagon has travelled over the last eight years in terms of ambition, status and profile that we have attracted someone of Davids calibre and reputation." He added, "We believe this appointment marks a watershed in the Octagons progress to becoming a major player in British Theatre." David Chadderton
