Autumn/Winter in Oldham.

The Oldham Coliseum has announced its autumn/winter programme. The theatre received more nominations than any other theatre at last year's prestigious Manchester Evening News Awards ceremony and the new season emphasises many of the strands that lead to the Coliseum's success, says artistic director Kevin Shaw.

"We have a tradition of pleasing and at the same time challenging our audience," he said. "The Coliseum is genuinely owned by its community and we are very proud of the efforts we are making in involving local people in the theatre. Our new season schedule is typical of the mix that we have tried to make synonymous with the Coliseum's aspirations."

The theatre tries to commission a brand new show every year and next February sees Wake Up Little Suzie, a new rock and roll musical by Philip Goulding in the tradition of Good Golly Miss Molly which was a hit earlier in the current season.

"We see it as important to be a theatre that commissions new work," Shaw adds." The show is set in the long hot summer of 1976 at Tilton's Holiday camp. It is packed with the songs from that summer, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Summerlove Sensation and Under The Moon of Love. There are fewer and fewer theatres commissioning new productions which is a shame as originality and development are part of the naturalistic creative growth that should inspire a theatre."

There will be the usual very popular panto at Christmas (Sleeping Beauty this year), but, he says, "It is essential that we offer theatre that is challenging as well as the tried and tested favourites. This year, for example we are proud to offer Ayckbourn's Absurd Person Singular, as well as James Robson's Mail Order Bride. It is this balance between the traditional and the innovative that keeps the theatre at the forefront of local entertainment. There is an artistic heritage that we have to honour and I feel the new season is exciting and inspirational in this respect."
