New Old Vic Season

The Old Vic has announced its 2006 - 2007 season. It begins, as already announced, with Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten, which will star Kevin Spacey.

A Moon for the Misbegotten
By Eugene O'Neill
Opens 26th September (previews from 15th)

The Taming Of The Shrew and Twelfth Night
By William Shakespeare
Produced by Propeller and directed by Edward Hall
In rep from 5th January to 17th February

The Entertainer
By John Osborne
Directed by Sean Homes, starring Robert Lindsay and Pam Ferris
Opening in February

Future projects include a panto - a version of Cinderella by Stephen Fry (which will not be ready for this Christmas) and a revival of Alan Ayckbourn's The Norman Conquests, directed by Matthew Warchus. There will also be premieres of new plays developed through the theatre's New Voices project: by Di Trevis and Frank McGuinness (working title Londoners) and Malcolm McKay (Bette and Joan). In addition, after the success of Richard II, Spacey and Trevor Nunn will reunite for an as yet unnamed production.

Spacey also announced three associate directors: Edward Hall, Anthony Page and Matthew Warchus.

He also confirmed that the theatre will remain dark until September, saying that he won't “throw a play into the Old Vic just for the sake of it”. In future, however, the theatre will not close for summer for “we have learned our lesson”.

In defence of his management, he added, “We will have other plays that won’t work, every theatre has that. We presented eight plays and six of them were hits for us.” He is, he added, at the theatre “for the long haul.”

“While a positive attitude may not solve all our problems,” he said, “it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort!”
