Only When I Laugh on Tour LOVE&MADNESS is to tour Jack Shepherd's new comedy about post-war variety shows, Only When I Laugh, starting and finishing in London. It's the 1950's and Leeds Empire 'Variety' theatre manager, Stanley (Jack Shepherd) isn't having a good day. The bill-topping comic Reg is the hero of the working classes but a singer has been sent from London who also expects top billing. The council want Stanley to tone down Reg's vulgar routine (the only thing more crude and vulgar than his act is his behaviour in the dressing room), the number two comic and one of the tap dancing twins are cavorting behind everyone's backs. And he's just heard that the band is stuck in traffic. Will the show go on? Only When I Laugh takes a look at the nature of working class entertainers made good, and the mixed feelings that those performers have for the people and lifestyles they have left behind. A working class hero may well be something to be, but it's certainly not an easy thing to be. The play stars writer Shepherd and Jim Bywater and is directed by Nicky Henson. It opens at the Greenwich Theatre, where it runs from 27th to 31st January , before moving on to the Harrogate Theatre (3rd - 7th February), the Byre Theatre, St Andrews (11th - 14th Feb), the Middlesbrough Theatre (26th - 28th February), Oldham Coliseum (3rd - 7th March), Galsgow Citizen's Theatre, part of the Glasgow Comedy Festival (10th - 14th March), the Stephen Joseph, Scarborough (6th - 11th April), ending at the Arcola, London, from 14th April to 2nd May.
