English Youth Ballet is holding open auditions on 29 March for its production of Swan Lake at Sunderland Empire.

The company, which comprises eight international principal dancers, two artistic ballet staff, two wardrobe mistresses and four theatre technicians led by director Janet Lewis MBE, is looking for 100 young dancers, both male and female, aged between 8 and 18 from across the region. Those who are successful will take part in the production at the Empire on 16 and 17 June.

The policy of EYB is to give professional performance experience to young dancers in venues close to where they live. The young dancers will coached and mentored by the professional dancers in an 11-day rehearsal period which takes place out of school hours, thus gaining a unique insight into what it is like to be a professional dancer.

The audition will take the form of a full ballet class, which will be held on stage with parents and friends encouraged to sit in the auditorium and watch.

Dancers will find out on the day if they are successful. It is advisable to register for the audition in advance but it is possible to register on the day (arrive 30 minutes early to register). The audition fee is £15. All dancers at audition will participate in a full ballet class.

For more information and to register for the audition, contact Miss Lewis either on 01689 856747 or e-mail [email protected].

Auditions, on Wednesday 29 March at the Empire, will be from 4:30 to 6:15PM for dancers aged 8 to 11 and from 6:45 to 8:30PM for dancers aged 12 to 18.
