Opportunities for Playwrights

There are a range of competitions and other opportunities for playwrights:

Royal Court Young Writers Festval
The Royal Court's Young Writers Festival has an unrivalled reputation for discovering new voices for the British stage, showcasing the very best young talent. If you are 25 or under and have an original play up your sleeve, in a drawer or burning a hole in your pocket, write it and send it into the Young Writers Festival competition by 31st May 2008. Your play can be of any length and on any subject. The most exciting plays will win a production at the Royal Court in spring 09.

The Wireless Theatre Company
The Wireless Theatre Company is interested in submissions from actors, writers and anyone who has a love of audio theatre. The company has launched a new project designed to nurture and encourage fresh new writers, and up and coming acting talent bringing 'classic drama, hilarious comedy and orginal full length plays, sketches, stories and poetry to new audiences.'

Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting (Columbus State University)
The Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting was established in 2003 by Larry Corse, Professor Emeritus of Theatre and English at Clayton State University, to encourage the development and production of new works for the stage. The prize has been awarded four times and in each of these years the competition received more than 300 plays from around the world.

  • The Prize: $1,000 and a production by Columbus State University Department of Theatre in the 2009-2010 school year.
  • Eligibility: The competition is open to all.
  • The Play:
    1. A play submitted to the competition should be finished, original, in English and must not have been previously published or performed (excluding workshop readings).
    2. The play should be full-length and should a running time between 60 and 120 minutes.
    3. The number of actors needed for the play should be between 5 and 10.

Writers' Theatre Short Play Festival
"MelBorn08" is the short play festival from the respected Melbourne Writers' Theatre founded by Australian playwright Jack Hibberd in 1982. MelBorn 08 is the 7th annual short play competition which will take place in conjunction with the Melbourne Fringe Festival from 24 September – 11 October, 2008 at the Carlton Courthouse Theatre, Melbourne, Australia. Playwrights win a cash prize.
Playwrights are invited to submit plays (10 minutes or less) to the short play competition. Submissions are welcome from national and international playwrights.
