Patsy Rowlands (1934 - 2005)

Actress Patsy Rowlands has died of breast cancer at the age of 71.

Although best known for appearing in nine of the Carry On films, she had a long stage career, beginning with Sandy Wilson's Valmouth at the Saville Theatre in 1958, during which she co-starred alongside Laurence Olivier (in Semi-Detached, directed by Tony Richardson, in 1961) and Donald Sinden (in Shut Your Eyes and Think of England). She appeared twice at the National Theatre, in The Pied Piper and The Wind in the Willows, both directed by Nicholas Hytner.

Other theatrical credits included The Seagull and The March on Russia, both directed by Lindsay Anderson, and West End musical revivals: Sam Mendes Oliver!, Cameron Mackintosh's My Fair Lady, as well as Into the Woods and Me and My Girl.

But she is best known for her film and TV performances, especially the nine Carry On films: Carry On Behind (1975), Carry On Dick (1974), Carry On Abroad (1973), Carry On Girls (1973), Carry On Matron (1972), Carry On at Your Convenience (1971), Carry On Henry (1971), Carry On Loving (1970), Carry On Again, Doctor (1969).

Among her sitcom TV performances were Bless This House (1971-76), The Squirrels (1975-77), Kinvig (1981) and Hallelujah! (1983-84), and she also appeared in the 1998 version of Vanity Fair.

Her films included On the Fiddle (1961) with Sean Connery, A Kind of Loving (1962) with Alan Bates, Tom Jones (1963) with Albert Finney, A Stitch in Time (1963) with Norman Wisdom, Please Sir! (1971), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1972), and Roman Polanski's Tess (1979).

She died peacefully in her sleep on 22nf january at the Martlets Hospice in Hove, East Sussex.
