Phone Home - video linked performance

Three theatre companies are presenting a play about the experiences of refugees and migrants, working together to present the piece simultaneously from their native UK, Greek and German locations.

Performed live from London, Athens and Munich, the three companies will be linked by video-conferencing.

The play is based on real life experiences and has emerged from workshops with refugees and migrants held in the three countries with playwright Zodwa Nyoni as lead creator. Nyoni's credits include Nine Lives.

The text is by Eri Kyrgia, Yannis Kalavrianos, Zodwa Nyoni, Tom Mansfield, Michael Sommer and Nora Schüssler with additional material from members of the company.

From the UK, Upstart Theatre has been working with refugees and asylum seekers from the LGBT centre in Birmingham, Action for Refugees in Lewisham, music charity for young refugees and asylum seekers Fairbeats and Write to Life, the writing group run by Freedom from Torture.

The other companies involved are Pathos Theater Munich and Highway Productions Greece.

The cast is composed of Simon Carroll-Jones, Nadi Kemp-Sayfi and Rochi Rampal; Tom Mansfield, artistic director of Upstart Theatre, directs with Yannis Kalavrianos and Michael Sommer.

Phone Home is hosted by Shoreditch Town Hall with an off–site run from 19 to 20 October at Oxford House, Bethnal Green and a run at Shoreditch Town Hall from 21 to 30 October. It is suitable for ages 14+.
