Pinter to Direct in Birmingham

Harold Pinter, regarded by some people as Britain's foremost living dramatist, is to direct a new play by Simon Gray at Birmingham Rep in June.

Pinter, 73, who has written more than thirty plays himself, has been directing for the past forty years and first collaborated with Gray in 1971. This will be the ninth Gray play that Pinter has directed.

The Old Masters lays open the world of the market in fine art. It explores issues of true value, forgery and fraud through the real-life relationship between art dealer Joseph Duveen and renowned art critic Bernard Berenson.

Artistic director at Birmingham Rep Jonathan Church said, "The Old Masters is a wonderful new play and it's a real coup to have Harold Pinter and Simon Gray working with us here in Birmingham. This prestigious production demonstrates to audiences that the Rep is committed to providing theatre of the highest quality."

This will be the first time that Pinter has directed at the Rep. The theatre, though, has presented many of his plays including Old Times in 1993, The Caretaker in 1983 and The Homecoming in 1973.

The Old Masters will open on Friday, June 4th and runs until Saturday, June 19th. Casting will be announced next month. Tickets are already on sale and can be booked by calling the box office on 0121 236 4455.
