Dateline: 13th October, 2005
Harold Pinter has won the Nobel Prize for Literature, it was announced in Stockholm this morning. Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue where people are at the mercy of each other and pretense crumbles, the citation said. He uncovers, it goes on, the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms. The Swedish Academy, which advises the Nobel Foundation on the choice of the Lierature laureate, said that the playwright, who was 75 on 10th October, is "generally seen as the foremost representative of British drama in the second half of the 20th century." The prize is worth 10 million kroner (£731,820). Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
