Writing Plays for Children

Polka Theatre is inviting those who want to write plays for children to take part in Playgrounding 2, a year-long project exploring how to write plays for children and young people, aimed at both new and experienced writers.

Stage 1: Masterclass on New Writing for Children
22 June 2004 at Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, London W1
10am - 5pm: How to develop script ideas with Charlie Way (writer), Annie Wood (Artistic Director), Richard Shannon (Director of New Writing), Frauke Franz (Dramaturg) of Polka Theatre and writers from last year's programme

Stage 2: Submission of Play Treatments
Deadline: 23 July 2004
Writers submit a short synopsis and a maximum of five pages of dialogue

Stage 3: Writers' Panel for 10 short-listed writers
21 September 2004
10am - 1pm: Charlie Way, Tim Webb (Oily Cart) talk about their writing process
2pm - 5pm: Feedback to writers on their ideas

Stage 4: Development Workshop
18 - 22 October 2004
Five invited writers attend a one week development workshop with the artistic team at Polka and leading theatre practitioners including Charlie Way, Steve Tiplady (puppeteer/Little Angel), Scott Graham (physical performer/ Frantic Assembly), Olly Fox (composer), Keith Baker (designer) and a team of actors

Stage 5: One-To-One Script Development
November 2004 - June 2005
Writers take part in one-to-one script development sessions, workshops in schools and spend a day with the supporting companies.

Stage 6: Two-day Dramaturgical Workshop
17-18 March 2005
A two day workshop exploring physical ideas in a dramaturgical workshop

Stage 7: Staged Readings
6 - 11 June 2005
Playgrounding culminates in a week of staged readings
