Dateline: 17th October, 2004 Powys Arts Funding Cuts Proposed Powys County Council's Children, Families and Lifelong Learning Committee has recommended to full council that all funding to Theatre in Education company Theatr Powys and to Powys Dance should cease, in spite of the council's own officers' recommendations that there should be no cuts in their budgets. Both companies provide a range of services within the county and attract significant partnership funding. Currently Theatr Powys is touring two TiW shows, one in Welsh and one in English; a new play will be touring to community and arts venues during December and January; a youth tehatre production of Watership Down is in rehearsal and a new youth arts initiative in South Powys is due to start in February. Powys Dance organises community classes, regular DanceFests and is about to start an accredited course in dance for Early Years teachers. Ian Yeoman, artistic director of Theatr Powys said, The nationally and internationally recognised skills, specialisms and expertise of two companies who have served the schools and communities of Powys for 30 years with Council support could be lost forever, whilst Councillor Louis Williams commented that the service provided by the two organisations is invaluable and that it is imperative that they should continue. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
