Traditional repertory theatre company, Swanage Rep Company, are to cast the role of Jim in the season’s family show, The Railway Children, through open auditions.

This opportunity will see the young man working as part of a company of experienced actors and crew, and learning about rehearsing and staging a play.

Katherine Mount of producers Hordern Ciani said, “repertory theatre was traditionally the training ground for actors, and so far we have had great pleasure reinstating that system and working with some very talented cast members who are fresh to the industry.

"We would now like to take that yet further and help to develop the skills of someone even earlier in their professional acting journey. With the weekly rep model of just 5 days' rehearsal, it will be quite an introduction for them!”

The character of Jim is rescued after falling on to the train track; he appears late on in the story.

Auditions are open to local young males aged 16 to 21. They will take place on 8 July from 12 noon at the Mowlem Theatre.

The Railway Children is the second of three plays in the 2018 Swanage Rep Summer Season:

  • Waiting for God - a stage adaptation of the television sitcom written by and adapted by Michael Aitken playing 7 to 10 August
  • The Railway Children - written by Edith Nesbitt and adapted as a stage musical by Dave Simpson playing 14 to 17 August
  • Communicating Doors - an observational comedy by Alan Ayckbourn playing 21 to 24 August
