The country's only full-time professional LGBT+ theatre, Above the Stag Theatre, is hoping to move into bigger premises next year.

The current expansion plans rest on the theatre getting approval of its change of use planning application.

Approval would see two adjoining arches in Vauxhall's Goding Street, whose current use is a gym, be transformed into a 120-seat main house, a 60-seat studio space and two rehearsal rooms, together with a gallery space and a café/bar.

There is a little under four weeks remaining before the public consultation period on their planning application closes. Comments may be submitted online and so far nearly 650 comments have been recorded.

The commercial argument for Above the Stag's proposed move is a sound one since every production for the last year has played to sell-out audiences. In addition to full productions, the venue also has a programme of exhibitions, rehearsed readings and other events.

Following the demolition of The Stag pub in Victoria, where the theatre was founded, Above The Stag moved to Vauxhall in 2013.
