New Writing for Puppets

England's development agency for the art-form of puppetry, the Puppet Centre Trust, has announced the results of its unique commissions project for puppeteers and writers. The Moving Words project launched over the summer a nationwide search for writers and puppetry artists ready to explore the processes of collaborating closely. The project offers co-commissions and will result in co-owned scripts ensuring that the puppetry and writing creatively combine at every stage in the course of making the work.

Four artists have been commissioned to create two new shorts. Established puppeteer Gavin Skerrit whose solo shows exploring community and identity have toured Norway, France, Holland, Sweden and the UK has been commissioned to work with Rachael McGill, a previous recipient of the Peggy Ramsay award, (The Lemon Princess, 2003), The Gate Theatre Translation Award (2004) and Radio Times Critics Choice (Scissors and Ribbon, Radio Four 2004).

Second, emergent puppeteer and designer Maximum Humphries, who has recently been collaborating with acclaimed Bristol company Green Ginger, will be working with playwright and screenwriter Andrew Muir, whose previous work has been awarded the Peter Brook Empty Space Award (Tales from a Pier, Union Theatre 2003) and British Council Short Film of the Year (A Family Man, Juju Films 2003).

More than fifty applications were received from around the country for this unique project and were assessed and the artists matched by a Panel expert in the development of new work including John Wright of Told by an Idiot; Nina Steiger, Head of Soho Writers Centre, and Steve Tiplady Artistic Director of the Little Angel Theatre.

Beccy Smith, Director of the Puppet Centre Trust explained "We are thrilled with the artists who've been selected. This represents a remarkable opportunity to push puppetry and writing into previously little-explored territory. We wait with anticipation to see what the pairs come up with!" The work will receive a rehearsed reading premiere at Soho Theatre in February 2006.

The project is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and supported by Soho Writers' Centre alongside the Puppet Centre Trust.
