Dateline: 16th September, 2005 Rambert Dance Company is build a new £16.5m headquarters on the South Bank, it was announced this week. The six storey building will include a big studio space (larger, in fact, than the stage at Sadler's Wells) with retractable seating for fifty, two smaller studios, changing facilities, technical support facilities, office space, an archive resource centre and a reception area. Much of the new space will also be available for community use and the company is committed to engaging fully with the local area, Lambeth and Southwark. Prue Skene, chair of Rambert, said that the UKs oldest dance company, which will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year, is in a strong position both financially and artistically, making now the perfect time to move into a state-of-the-art facility. The new building was welcomed by London's Mayor, Ken Livingstone, who said that London is proud to be the home of the UK's oldest modern dance company. "I look forward to the increased contribution the company can make by enabling many more of our young Londoners to take part in education and community projects, as well as encouraging the development of creativity at all ages through dance, he added. £7m of the cost has already been raised and the company hope to move into the new building by summer 2008. The South Bank is already a major cultural area, with the National Theatre, the National Film Theatre, the Globe, Tate Modern, the Old Vic, the Young Vic and the Royal Festival Hall all within easy walking distance of each other Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
