Another Record Fringe

This year's Edinburgh Fringe - the 58th - has broken box office records for the second year running. Last year ticket sales topped one million for the first time: this year the figures have improved by almost 70,000, in spite of poor weather.

First indications of the actual cash taken at the box office suggest that £10.8m worth of tickets were sold, £1m up on 2003. The strongest advance sales ever meant that every show had sold at least one ticket before the Fringe opened, said director Paul Gudgeon. This, he added, is another first.

"Despite appalling weather and competing with an interesting Olympics we have excelled again, which is very pleasing," he added. "We also have learned lessons about the weather which we will use to try to combat the problem next year."

The overall success was reflected by individual venues. The Assembly Rooms, which lost its sponsor this year, sold 25,000 more tickets than last year and reached total sales of £2m.

Altoether it is estimated that the various festivals brought in tourist income to the city in excess of £200m.
