Royalty: Robert Powell will play King Charles

Robert Powell will play King Charles in the Olivier Award-winning production of King Charles III which opens at Birmingham REP in autumn 2015.

Mike Bartlett's play had sell-out runs at both the Almeida Theatre and at Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End. It “explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy and the conscience of Britain's most famous family”.

Robert Powell’s portrayal of Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth won him a BAFTA nomination for best actor. He was a regular as Mark Williams in Holby City.

His theatre credits include Singin' in the Rain at the Palace Theatre, Tom Stoppard’s Travesties for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and touring productions of Ted Willis’s adaptation of Richard Gordon’s novel Doctor in the House and Keith Waterhouse’s Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.

King Charles III is directed by Rupert Goold, artistic director of the Almeida Theatre, and is a Birmingham REP and Almeida Theatre co-production. Design is by Tom Scutt, music is composed by Jocelyn Pook, lighting is by Jon Clark and sound by Paul Arditti.

King Charles III runs at Birmingham REP from Friday 4 September until Saturday 19 September.
