Rupert Rhymes

"ACE Made Me a Scapegoat," Says Rhymes

Rupert Rhymes, who resigned last month as the chairman of the Bristol Old Vic board, has claimed that Arts Council, which he describes as a dictatorship, has made him the scapegoat for their own failures in regard to the troubled company.

According to a report in The Stage, he claimed that the company's financial problems are due to ACE's decisions and that it had attempted to influence the board's decisions by organising meetings with members without his knowledge.

"Unhappily," he also told the newspaper, "the methods of working adopted by ACE in respect of Bristol seem to contribute to the present disorder surrounding its proposals for revising its grant structure. These seem to me to be so damaging to the health of theatre in this country that external enquiry by qualified examiners is urgently needed. Dictatorship, especially when it is uninformed, needs to be challenged whenever and wherever it appears."

An ACE spokesman replied, "Board decisions are made by the members of the BOV board and not by the arts council. ACE has acted throughout to the highest professional standards."

The Arts Council has set aside £1.25m for producing theatre in the city and, said the spokesman, is "confident that BOV will play an important part in helping to make that happen and we look forward to receiving their plans."
