Joan Rivers

Rivers to Make London Acting Debut

Comedy icon Joan Rivers is to celebrate her 75th birthday in style by making her London acting debut in the autobiographical play Joan Rivers: A Work in Progress By a Life in Progress - and opening a major new West End theatre.

The play will be the premiere production at the 420-seat newly refurbished and re-named Leicester Square Theatre (formerly The Venue) at 5 Leicester Place London, WC2.

It will have a initial season from 29th August to 18th September, before returning with further dates between 2nd December and 29th January, 2009, before embarking on a Broadway season.

There will be an additional 19-date Edinburgh Festival preview season at the Underbelly Cow Barn from Thursday 7th to Monday 25th August.

In total there will be 75 performances. Joan Rivers will celebrate her 75th birthday on June 8. Even the dedicated booking number ends in 75!

Directed by Olivier Award-winner Sean Foley (The Play What I Wrote), Joan Rivers: A Work in Progress By a Life in Progress is a four-hander, part-confession, part-performance comedy drama based on her life. It reveals the woman behind the public face.

Set in her dressing room backstage at the Oscars ceremony, Joan is preparing for one of her legendary annual TV catwalk commentaries on the fashion hits and disasters at Hollywood's biggest night of the year. But all is not well... her dressing room is B, not A; her complimentary cheese is puny, not plentiful; and her producer is the bigwig's nephew, not the bigwig. The tension and drama are the catalyst for an introspective look at aging, going through life's ups and downs and being a woman in Hollywood.

The cast will be Joan Rivers, Emily Kosloski, Carrie Paff, Mark Philips, with, on camera, Melissa Rivers, Dorie Barton and Leo Marks.
