Dateline: 23rd May, 2007 TV and theatre director Robin Midgley has died of cancer at the age of 72. Born in Devon, he went to King's College, Cambridge, where he was the first undergraduate to direct a production for the Marlowe Society and, in a variety of producions, worked with casts which included Jonathan Miller, Sylvia Plath and Daniel Massey. After leaving Cambridge he became a radio drama producer where he produced two series of Sherlock Holmes in 1961 and 1962 He soon moved into television, where he directed some of the earliest episodes of Z Cars (which began in January 1962 and ran for sixteen years) and was also responsible for the BBC TV version John Barton and Peter Hall's production of The Wars of the Roses for the RSC. In 1964 he began to direct for the RSC at the Aldwych and worked with Bernard Miles at the Mermaid. Then, in 1973, became artistic director at the Phoenix, Leicester, and then of the Haymarket, directing over eighty productions there, may of which toured nationally, and transferred to the West End. Amongst them was the first stage version of Dennis Potter's Son of Man. Later he moved on to Cambridge Theatre Company, based at the Arts, from 1988 to 1991 and the Lyric Theatre, Belfast (1992-98). His work in TV continued and he spent six years as head of drama at Pebble MIll. Most recently he was deeply involved in actor training, teaching and directng at RADA and coaching young singers at the Royal Opera House.
