2008 Rod Hall Memorial Award

Paines Plough and the Rod Hall Agency have announces that the winner of the 2008 Rod Hall Memorial Award is Phil Davies, for his play Adjusted.

The Rod Hall Memorial Award is presented by Paines Plough and the Rod Hall Agency every two years to an outstanding new playwright. The award was created in memory of Rod Hall, the visionary literary agent and founder of The Rod Hall Agency. He believed in nurturing untried new talent and supported his writers unreservedly. This award is intended to launch the writing career of an emerging dramatist.

Winner Phil Davies was born in Rochdale and read English at Manchester Metropolitan University. His first full-length play A Murder of Crows, which he completed last year, was in the top 10% of the prestigious Bruntwood Prize. He has also won a bursary to study at the Arvon Foundation; in 2008 he was invited to the Netherlands to represent the UK at Interplay Europe Young Playwrights Festival, where his play Adjusted was the featured play at the Institute of Contemporary Arts’ Lab event.

The award signifies a long term commitment to the recipient by both the Rod Hall Agency and Paines Plough. He receives £5,000, a year-long residency at Paines Plough, during which time he will be supported in the writing of a full length play; he will receive representation from The Rod Hall Agency.

On receiving the award, Phil Davies said, "Winning the award means a great deal to me. I'm delighted by it. I can't wait to start working with such an exciting bunch of people!"
